Article on Catholic Schools, February 1, 2009

by the Most Reverend Salvatore R. Matano

Ninth Bishop of Burlington

Our Catholic schools are necessary institutions to fulfill the mandate of Jesus to His disciples: “Go therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you.” (Matthew 28: 19-20). Building upon this theme, His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, in his address to the Community of Catholic Education at The Catholic University of America on April 17, 2008, stated: “Education is integral to the mission of the Church to proclaim the Good News. First and foremost every Catholic institution is a place to encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth.” Our Holy Father goes on to mention specifically the importance of Catholic schools in this work of evangelization: “The Catholic community here has in fact made education one of its highest priorities. This undertaking has not come without great sacrifice. Towering figures, like Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and other founders and foundresses, with great tenacity and foresight, laid the foundations of what is today a remarkable network of parochial schools contributing to the spiritual wellbeing of the Church and the nation.”

Fasting and almsgiving foster generosity. Generosity is not as simple as giving excess clothing to a place where poor people might purchase them or writing a check to benefit the poor. These are wonderful practices. However, generosity is an attitude. It is a sense that no matter how much I have, all that I have is a gift, and given to me to be shared. It means that sharing with others in need is one of my personal priorities. This is quite different from assessing all of my needs first and then giving away what is leftover. A spirit of selfless giving means that one of my needs is to share what I have with others.

BABY BOTTLE DRIVE

We will be sponsoring a Baby Bottle Drive the weekend of February 21/22 to benefit the Our Lady of Guadalupe Pregnancy Resource Center located in the K of C Building, 21 Merchants Row, Rutland. This is an opportunity for our parish families to have an involvement in a project that saves lives of unborn children and ministers to women who are currently, or have had a crisis pregnancy. The Center also assists Moms and their children with clothing, diapers, food, and baby furniture. Please take one bottle per household, fill it with a check, cash and coins and return it to the bassinettes located at the exits of the church the weekend of March 7/8. Thank you.
