Next Saturday, June 26, Deacon Luke Austin from Christ the King parish will be ordained a priest by Bishop Matano in Burlington. We pray that Fr. Austin’s ministry as a priest will be a source of great blessing for him and our Diocese.

The faithful of the Diocese of Burlington are cordially invited to the ordination to the priesthood of Deacon P. Luke Austin on Saturday, June 26, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Burlington. “Every ordination to the sacred priesthood is a great cause for rejoicing. Yet, how much more so at the end of this Year for Priests should we unite in prayerful support for our priests," said Father Daniel White, director of vocations for the Diocese of Burlington and vice chancellor. “As the diocesan director of vocations for the Diocese of Burlington, I take this opportunity to extend an invitation to all of the faithful to join with the Most Reverend Salvatore R. Matano, Bishop of Burlington, the priests of the diocese and the family and friends of Deacon Luke P. Austin at the Solemn Mass of Ordination to witness his ordination and to pray for him as he begins his priestly ministry." On that day, his will freely offer his entire life to God, to be used to teach, sanctify and govern the faithful in the name of Jesus Christ, building up the family of faith, the holy Catholic Church, Father White added. During the ordination Mass, Deacon Austin—now a transitional deacon—will be called to serve God’s people. In the presence of Bishop Matano, he will express his resolve to carry out his office in accord with the mind of Christ and the Church under the direction of the bishop. After he is presented, the bishop will accept him for ordination. Later, Bishop Matano will examine the candidate who will confirm his intention to serve in the office of priest with a clear conscience, an undivided heart and prayerful spirit after the example of Jesus. After the Litany of Saints will come the Laying On of Hands and Prayer of Ordination. Through them, the gift of the Holy Spirit for the priestly office will be conferred on the candidate. Priests present will lay their hands on the elect to signify incorporation into the priesthood. The newly ordained priest will then be vested in a stole and chasuble, signs of the office of priesthood. The bishop will anoint the hands of the newly ordained Father Austin with holy chrism and later place the paten holding the bread and the chalice containing the wine into his hands, signifying his duty to preside at the celebration of the Eucharist and of following Christ crucified. During the Sign of Peace, the bishop will welcome Father Austin as a co-worker in the ministry, and the other priests present will come forward to welcome him into the Order of Presbyters. The ordination to the priesthood will be an opportunity for the lay people of the diocese of join with clergy to witness the Sacrament of Holy Orders, to pray for the newly ordained priest and to offer him their congratulations and support. 30 .

Parents and Guardians:  Get Involved

Parents and guardians play a key role in the success of parish programs for young people. Parents and guardians who are involved in parish programs and events will be in the best position to protect their own children as well as all the children in the parish community. Involvement and communication are important factors in helping to ensure safe environments for all of our children.

For particular help you may call, Kevin Scully or Jeanne Bruno at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington at 1-802-658-6110.

PRAYER TO GOD THE FATHER

O God, our Father in Heaven, I marvel to think that You have called me to be a father, too.

For in Your presence I am but a child. You are strong, I am weak, You are all holy, I am a sinner, You are perfect in wisdom and love, I am often blind and prone to selfishness.

In spite of all this, You have called me to be a father here on earth. I ask from You the grace to lead my family along Your paths, By my words, but especially by my example and my prayer. Help me to put my wife and children ahead of my own ambitions and recreations, to be attentive to their needs, just as You show Your provident care to all of us.

And when firmness or discipline are required, help me to be motivated not by frustration or impatience, but – like You – by a heart of love.

Amen.
